DRAINAGE ADVICE

Solve Your Drainage Problems with These 4 Simple Steps

Water standing after a storm can make a yard difficult to use. These steps help you understand the problem and plan a lasting drainage solution.

1. Find the areas collecting water

Look at the property during and after rainfall. Note recurring puddles, soggy patches, low spots near the foundation and places where downspouts discharge. Also determine whether the issue occurs only during rainfall or when the irrigation system runs; an irrigation leak needs a different repair.

2. Match the drainage method to the problem

Surface catch basins collect runoff in low areas, while French drains may help in persistently saturated soil. Solid PVC drain lines can convey captured water away from the affected area. In some yards, roof downspout tie-ins or grading changes are part of the design.

3. Plan and install the system

A drainage plan should account for available slope, utility locations, maintenance access and the discharge location. Local requirements may affect where water is permitted to leave the property. Installations need suitable pipe, fittings, basins and backfill for the specific design.

4. Inspect after rain and maintain the system

Clear leaves and debris from grates and gutters, monitor areas where pooling used to occur, and have damaged or blocked lines investigated. Routine checks make drainage performance problems easier to identify before they cause further disruption.
